It's almost time
In less than 2 weeks I head back to the US. It's been one hell of a summer full of surprises and while I had all these plans to prepare myself for MBA school, I guess it's going to come down to the mini-courses and orientation leading up to the first day of classes, beginning Aug 30th.
Yesterday I took an online accounting exam as part of an exercise to get placed in the appropriate class depending on my level of knowledge and understanding of the subject.
Based on a survey I filled out, the IT department at SOM informed me that I could continue to use my existing laptop at school after I made a few upgrades. That's a relief -- it's going to save me about $2K, which means that much less loan to pay off at the end of all of this.
I've been debating the idea of getting a PDA. While I think it would make sense to get one in terms of organizing myself, I wonder if I can just get the same functionality using a simple pencil and planner. This alone could save me a few hundred bucks
According to SOM, I should have been regularly reading up the business newspapers (WSJ, FT) over the summer. So I got a subscription to the WSJ Online considering that I have been in India all summer. But then, that's all I've done with it so far -- have it reflect on my credit card bill. Maybe it's time to dig up the archives and play so catchup -- or I could just say "screw it" and move on.
I also recd my email account from Yale. That was kind of fun to see my address have a .edu at the end of it again! But unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working just yet.
The Office of Career Development (OCD) sent us an email a few weeks ago, asking us to get our resume ready and take some online self-assessment test and a few other things. All this needs to get done before orientation. I was impressed by how they've started to get the ball rolling already. From my understanding of the internal structure and working of the OCD, they seem to have transformed themselves into an efficient organization focused on helping the students find their most suitable choice of career. Good stuff. I hope this is a sign of good things to come from their end.
Other than that, housing search continues and I'm looking forward to living in a small town again after a gap of four years with Chicago and New York being what I called home in those four years.
I looked at the list of courses that are being offered at SOM. While the first semester (which is broken up into 2 sessions) is all core classes, I'm eager to take a bunch of classes that are being offered as electives. Based purely on the number of courses being offered, it is apparent that SOM's focus is Finance, Strategy, and Non-Profit Mgmt. The Marketing dept appears to offer the least number of electives.
Well, so much for that. Quite a lot of things to think about and things have already become exciting with the planning required around being in New Haven. It's a great feeling to see a long journey that started more than a year ago, finally come to a closing point, with a fantastic new journey to welcome me in the few years ahead....
